Junák Svaz skautů a skautek ČR
Junak Association of Scouts and Guides CZ

With its almost 46.000 members Junák - Association of Scouts and Guides of the Czech Republic is the largest civic association of children and youth in the country. At the same time it is a member of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) and World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).
It operates in accordance with their missions, principles and methods. It is also a member of the organisation of adult Scouts and Guides called the International Scout and Guide Fellowship (ISGF).

Junák was established in 1911 and was prohibited three times by totalitarian regimes and always renewed thereafter . The mission of Junák is to support the development of children and young people`s personalities, their spiritual, moral, intellectual, social and physical abilities, in order to enable them to be prepared in their lives to fulfil their duties to themselves, to others, to God, to nature and to the whole of human society.

Czech Scouts and Guides organize many Scout events on the national level as well as local ones. The largest national one, reaching the whole association, is the Svojsik's race of Scout/Guide patrols in traditional disciplines, which take place every two years and alternates with a similar competition of Cubs and Brownies. Besides that another competition of youngest members in drama called Theatre Six is organized annually. A similar activity for Scout/Guide category –Scout and Guide Musical brings together teams of talented amateur actors and singers.
For the older youth age section, Rangers and Rovers, a national meeting called ObRok is held every second year in the beginning of May, bringing together more than 600 young members, who participate in a whole range of activities – helping the local community, exchanging programme ideas, discussing various issues with interesting personalities, going for a concert etc.
Traditional annual weekend seminar for rovers and rangers is also organized every year by and for them in Prague in December.

Summer camps in the Czech Republic usually last 2-3 weeks, a lot of leadership courses, wood badge courses and training activities are organized annually at the end of August.

As a widely trusted organization, Junák is involved in many charity activities and projects, such as charity collection Help the children and Drop of blood supporting the donors of ossuary marrow. Participants of summer camps devote their time to help our forests and the money raised goes for charity according to Junák’s choice.
Bethlehem Peace Light is distributed by members of Junák traditionally around the country before Christmas. In 2004 and 2005 a new charity collections started, raising funds to build schools in Ethiopia.

The Press and Distribution Centre of Junak produces 4 magazines for all the age categories and also methodical and other materials (between 10 and 15 publications a year).

FENIX - meeting in Prague in 1997 attended mainly by Scouts and Guides from Central and Eastern Europe renewed tradition from 1931 and 1933 and meetings continued in other Central European countries (1998 in Slovakia, 1999 in Poland, 2001 in Hungary, 2004 in Slovakia). Next Central European Guide and Scout Jamboree will take place in the Czech Republic in July 2006.

In 1994 and 2004 - INTERCAMP took place in our country. The same year "water" Scouts arranged their big event (a kind of a national jamboree) - NAVIGAMUS, which was repeated in 1997, 2000, 2003 as a sea scout international jamboree. Next Navigamus is planned for 2006.

In 2006 Central European Jamboree ORBIS 2006 will be organized by Junak.

In 2003 Junák launched an internet learning project for children ( to teach them how to cope with difficult life situations. It is an educational and simulating game, where children encounter various crisis situations (in a city, water, forest or meadow) in a comic strips story and by going through the short stories they choose solutions in a safe environment. The project became very popular immediately after its start and is also used by school teachers. Efforts are being made to introduce the project in other countries as well.
